- Momentum transfer pumps, which are also referred to as molecular pumps. These pumps make use of high speed rotating blades which or jets of dense fluid which knocks gas molecules out of the chamber
- Positive displacement pumps make use of a mechanism which ultimately will repeatedly expand a cavity, allowing gases to flow in from the chamber and seal off the cavity and exhaust it to the atmosphere
- Entrapment pumps capture gases in an absorbed or solid state.
